60 barangay officials on 'drug list' won fresh mandates: PDEA

MANILA – Sixty barangay officials who won fresh mandates in this week's elections are among 207 village executives tagged in the government's drug list, the head of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency said Thursday.

These include 36 barangay chairmen and 24 councilors, PDEA Chief Aaron Aquino said. Authorities will continue building cases against the 60 officials and even those who lost, he said.

Drug money was used to buy votes in some areas, he told DZMM.

The PDEA bared a list of officials allegedly involved in the narcotics trade weeks before the May 14 elections to discourage the public from voting for them.

"Naging successful naman sa tingin ko iyung paglalantad ng listahan na ito dahil kung hindi nalantad ito, iyung sinasabing marami, baka lahat, nanalo," said Aquino.

(I think the release of the list was successful because had it not been made public, perhaps all of the officials tagged there would have won.)

The figure does not include officials from Bicol and Caraga regions, he said.
