MANILA, Philippines – The Adamson University Lady Falcons know they are the underdogs when they play defending champion Ateneo de Manila University on Saturday.
But they are drawing inspiration from their second-round showdown last year when the Lady Falcons pushed the Lady Eagles to the brink before eventually succumbing in five sets, 25-21, 17-25, 25-14, 22-25, 15-10.
Adamson was only one of three teams to have pushed Ateneo to a five-setter in Season 77, along with De La Salle University and University of the Philippines.
The Lady Falcons enter Saturday’s UAAP Season 78 showdown on the heels of a three-game losing streak, the latest of which was a four-set defeat against University of the Philippines last Wednesday. They have little time to dwell about that loss, however, as they are set to face the Lady Eagles just three days later.
“Sabi lang naman sa amin ni Coach (Sherwin Meneses), gawin naming motivation ‘yung nangyaring five-set last year,” Adamson star Jema Galanza said after the game.
Ateneo needed a 30-point performance from Valdez, and for Adamson to commit a series of errors in the final set, to seal the win. Galanza scored 17 points in that game, while team captain Mylene Paat had 15 points.
“Dapat wala pa ring magbabago (sa amin),” Galanza said. “Kung may mga bumaba, dapat mag-isip, i-lift up ‘yung sarili. Tapos, consistent lang ‘yung maganda ang nilaro.”
Meneses, for his part, said it was crucial for his team to start on a strong note against Ateneo if they are hoping to pull off an upset.
Even if they wound up losing against the Lady Eagles, a strong performance against the defending champions will be a huge boost to their morale heading into their finals games of the first round, Meneses also said.
Adamson last defeated Ateneo in the second round of the Season 75 tournament.
