PANGLAO ISLAND — AirAsia landed for the first time at the New Bohol Airport here Tuesday, ahead of its formal opening.

The carrier's Airbus A320 from Manila was the first plane to use the new airport, dubbed the "green gateway to the world" with its environment-friendly facilities.

"We feel strongly about supporting the growth and development of cities outside Metro Manila,” AirAsia Philippines CEO Dexter Comendador said during the flight.

Built with assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the New Bohol Airport will be operated and maintained by Aboitiz Infra Capital.

The terminal sources 30 percent of its power requirements from solar. It is also equipped with a solid waste disposal system and a sewage treatment plant.

President Rodrigo Duterte is scheduled to inaugurate the facility later Tuesday.

The New Bohol Airport in Panglao can accommodate over 2 million passengers annually, more than double the 800,000 annual passenger capacity of the Tagbilaran airport.

As many as 7 aircraft can land in the new airport, including larger ones for international flights, the DOTr said.
