MANILA, Philippines – Arellano University cruised past Lyceum of the Philippines University on Sunday to stretch its winning streak to five games in the NCAA Season 93 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Four players scored in double digits as the Lady Chiefs barreled past the Lady Pirates, 25-16, 25-17, 25-11.
Rookie Nicole Ebuen had 11 points, while team captain Mary Ann Esguerra, Regine Arocha, and Andrea Marzan each fired 10 points for the defending champion Arellano, who improved to 5-0. Their solid efforts more than made up for Jovielyn Prado’s forgettable three-point performance.
In doing so, they regained the solo lead once more, leaving behind idle San Beda College (4-0).
The Lady Chiefs had a massive advantage in attacks, 41-20, and service aces, 9-3. They also got 24 free points from the Lady Pirates.
In the first women’s game, University of Perpetual Help survived an error-strewn game to hack out a 25-21, 22-215, 25-14, 25-21 victory over Jose Rizal University (JRU).
The Lady Altas improved to 4-1, to remain at solo third in the standings.
Lourdes Clemente had 19 points, including two kill blocks and three aces, to pace Perpetual Help, while Cindy Imbo scored five of her 18 points at the service line.
However, Perpetual Help coach Macky Cariño was not satisfied with his team’s performance.
“We have to improve our service, which was really bad in the first two sets,” said Cariño after watching his team give away 35 points off their unforced errors.
“If we can do that, we’ll have a strong chance this season.”
The Lady Altas somewhat limited JRU star Shola Alvarez, who entered the match averaging a league-best 22 points but managed only 15 points against Perpetual Help. Alvarez converted only 14 of her 48 spike attempts.
Rookie Dolly Grace Verzosa stepped up for the Lady Bombers, firing a career-high 21 points, all on attacks. However, it was not enough to keep her team from losing their third game in five assignments.
Earlier, Perpetual Help seized solo lead in the men’s division by beating JRU, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20.
