California deputies involved in forced prison fights charged

CALIFORNIA – Criminal charges were filed against two sheriff’s deputies and a former deputy accused of forcing inmates, including a Filipino-American, to fight gladiator-style for their own entertainment in San Francisco.

Deputies Clifford Chiba, Eugene Jones, and former deputy Scott New face felony misdemeanor charges that range from “assault by an officer under color of authority” to “cruel and unusual punishment”.

The case emerged after Fil-Am inmate Ricardo Palakiko Garcia told the public defender that deputies forced him to fight another inmate more than half his size on two occasions.

Garcia claimed the deputies bet money on the fights and forced him into battle with threats of violence or by withholding food.
