Chooks to Go played superb defense in the second half to secure a 72-65 victory over Kazakhstan’s BC Astana in their FIBA Asia Champions Cup campaign opener at the Chenzhou Sports Center in Chenzhou City, China.

Down by 8 points in the first half, Kiefer Ravena and company turned things around by limiting the taller Kazakhs in the next two quarters.

Ravena scored 22 points and grabbed 3 rebounds while import Isiah Austin added 17 markers to go with his 18 rebounds and 6 blocks.

Chooks to Go also had welcome contributions from Jeric Teng, Jett Manuel, and La Revilla.

After being down in the first half, 35-43, the Filipinos regrouped and turned up the heat on defense in the third quarter.

It worked wonders, as they limited the Kazakhs to just 12 points in that frame while taking a 57-55 lead going into the fourth stanza.

Following back-to-back baskets by Manuel and Norbert Torres the BC Astana fought back with successive threes that cut the Filipinos’ lead to 63-65 with 3:46 remaining.

But a couple of plays by Revilla and Austin gave the Pinoys a comfortable cushion until the final buzzer.
