MANILA — If he had his way, singer Gary Valenciano would have wanted to join ABS-CBN’s hit talent search “The Voice of the Philippines” as a judge.
Valenciano, currently a judge of “Your Face Sounds Familiar Kids”, made the admission during an interview on ANC’s Headstart with Karen Davila.
“I trusted ABS-CBN and they got the right judges. They got Sarah (Geronimo), they got apl.d.ap and then they got Bamboo. And now Sharon (Cuneta),” he said.
Broadway star Lea Salonga is also a judge of the talent competition.
Asked why he wanted to join The Voice, Valenciano said: “You are talking about artists who sing and they are not all amateurs. Some of them are pros so you have the right to say: ‘You are not singing it from where it should count. You are singing it here (points to his temple) or here (ear). Don’t think about winning The Voice.’ Think about, you know, I would have said stuff like that.”
Valenciano also noted that he had just finished his stint as a judge of X-Factor Philippines, which produced KZ Tandingan, when ABS-CBN started the search for The Voice of the Philippines judges.
Asked if he was bitter about not getting the show, he said: “I wasn’t bitter. I was just…sayang.”
In 2015, Valenciano personally asked several contestants of “The Voice of the Philippines,” led by Season 1 winner Mitoy Yonting to join him in his concert “Gary V Presents” held at Newport Performing Arts Theater of Resorts World Manila.
Currently, Valenciano, a Unicef ambassador since 1998, is promoting his upcoming benefit concert titled “Love In Motion.”
The concert’s proceed will go to the victims of typhoon Nina in Bicol, Unicef and Shining Light Foundation.
