MANILA — (UPDATE) Some 50 people sustained injuries due to an unruly crowd in a concert in the capital, police said Saturday.
The victims either fainted or sustained bruises at the Coke Studios Christmas Concert held at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds in Pasay City, Friday, said Senior Supt. Noel Flores, the city police chief.
There was "pushing, jumping on the barricades and throwing bottles" by "portions" that threatened the safety of the entire crowd at the concert, Coca-Cola said in a statement Saturday.
Fearing a possible stampede, Flores said they asked the concert organizers to suspend the program.
Police place the crowd at around 20,000 while Coca-Cola estimated some 15,000 spectators.
“Sobra kasi ang audience na dumating. Unexpected. Ngayon, napakadami kasi nga free ito…Ayaw namin na may mangyaring stampede,” Flores told ABS-CBN News.
(Too many people came because the concert is free. It was unexpected. We did not want a stampede.)
Coca-Cola said the victims were given medical attention.
"The safety of everyone is of utmost importance to us," Coca-Cola said, adding the Coke Studio Christmas Concert would be rescheduled.
Coca-Cola has been tapping local and foreign artists to participate in its Coke Studios project that aims to celebrate the growing diversity in music.
