MANILA – The Chamber of Mines will file a formal opposition against the confirmation of Environment Secretary Gina Lopez at the Commission of Appointments, according to Ronald Recidoro, the group’s vice president for legal and policy.
Recidoro said the Chamber of Mines has never opposed the appointment of an environment secretary but will make an exception.
“Today, we make an exception because we foresee Secretary Lopez as not qualified for the job,” Recidoro said in an interview with ANC Business Nightly on Tuesday.
Recidoro cited Lopez’s alleged bias against mining and her lack of experience in environmental resources management, saying these will not serve the country well.
He said the chamber is not eyeing anyone for the position.
Recidoro also said several mining companies have already received their closure orders from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
