MANILA, Philippines – After laboring to a come-from-behind victory over Jose Rizal University (JRU) in their season-opener, San Beda College was determined to put together an impressive performance in their second game of the NCAA Season 93 women’s volleyball tournament.
The Lady Red Spikers struggled in their first game, trailing by a set twice before taking a 23-25, 25-19, 13-25, 25-19, 15-9 win over the Lady Bombers.
“Napansin ko noong first game namin sa JRU, medyo malamya ‘yung mga teammates ko. Hindi lang sila; pati ako,” admitted San Beda captain Cescar Racraquin.
Thus, Racraquin made it a point to fire up her teammate before their game against University of Perpetual Help on Thursday.
“Before mag-start, sabi ko talaga, ‘Guys, kailangan nating maging aggressive sa lahat ng gagawin natin sa game today, sa offense, sa defense, sa lahat, kasi kailangan nating lumaban kasi pride natin ito,'” said the open spiker.
Racraquin was thrilled to see her teammates respond. Against a tough Perpetual team, the Lady Red Spikers took a 28-26, 25-18, 29-27 victory. Racraquin scored the clutch hits in the third frame, including the match-winner, while Nieza Viray scattered 20 points.
They showed their poise in crunch time, as they outlasted the Lady Altas in the extended first and third sets.
“Alam naman natin na ang Perpetual, malaking bump din sa road na dapat naming pag-daanan,” said Racraquin. “We went through that, and nalagpasan na namin ‘yun. I’m so happy.”
While she and Viray were the top scorers of the game, Racraquin stressed that their win was due to a team effort. Indeed, Trisha Paras and Sattriani Espiritu had their shining moments, while Rebecca Cuevas had 27 excellent through three frames as she orchestrated the San Beda offense.
“Ibang level ‘yung play na ginawa namin as a team today,” said Racraquin.
“Hindi lang kami umasa sa isang tao. Hindi kami individual today. We played as a whole,” she added.
Thanks to their impressive win over, San Beda now has a 2-0 win-loss record in the tournament.
“Importante ‘yan, kasi ‘yung format ng (tournament) natin, single round lang,” noted San Beda coach Nemesio Gavino. “Hindi talaga dapat matalo. Bawat game, kailangan maipanalo, kasi maliit ‘yung tsansa mo na makapasok sa Final 4.”
The Lady Red Spikers will try to go for a 3-0 record on Monday against De La Salle-College of St. Benilde.
