San Miguel thwarted Alaska once again as the Beermen foiled the Aces’ attempt to get an automatic entry to the playoffs with a huge 116-96 beatdown on Wednesday’s PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
The Aces, which lost to the Beermen in the Philippine Cup finals, was looking for payback against San Miguel, which played minus its prized center June Mar Fajardo.
Unfortunately, the Beermen’s perimeter shots clicked and everything went downhill for the Aces from then on.
Tyler Wilkerson, Arwind Santos and Chris Lassiter combined for a deadly 17-of-37 shooting from the three-point area.
“Umulan ng three-pointers. ‘Pag ganoon, mahirap talagang i-stop ang isang team,” said San Miguel coach Leo Austria in the PBA website.
Wilkerson finished with a total of 32 points and 14 rebounds, while Cabagnot had 22 markers. Santos chipped in 18 points and Chris Ross and Lassiter had 14 each.
Calvin Abueva went missing in the first half, but rallied Alaska in the third canto.
However, it proved too late as San Miguel turned a 13-point gap into an insurmountable 27-point lead midway the payoff period.
Aces import Shane Edwards settled for 15 points to go with his 12 rebounds. Ping Exciminano added 15 for Alaska, which also got 13 from Vic Manuel.
The Beermen now has a record of 4-2, just behind the Aces and the Bolts who are tied at 5-2.
