The ANC Brief: Minandao martial law extension

The military’s recommendation to extend martial law in Mindanao is giving some people the jitters. And President Duterte tries to get goofy. Here are the stories ANC will be reporting on today:

Misgivings on martial law

President Duterte said there is no decision yet on whether or not he would push for another extension of martial law in Mindanao. His spokesperson Sal Panelo said the president would likely approve the military’s recommendation for the extension. Some lawmakers like Sen. Koko Pimentel and Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Carlos Zarate are apprehensive.

Cracking a joke

Another outrageous statement from the president. But after saying publicly he smokes marijuana to stay awake, he said it was just a joke. Meanwhile, the President also ruled out any pardon for the policemen who killed youngster Kian delos Santos.

Asking for respect

In his first flag-raising ceremony as chief justice, Lucas Bersamin called for everyone to respect the decision of the President to appoint him to the position. Three of his colleagues who were contenders for the post were absent from the event. Today will be the first en banc session to be presided by Bersamin. Any decision should be closely watched as this can indicate what kind of court Bersamin will be running.

Perspective on inflation

Economic managers are saying inflation likely taper for the month of November, going below 6.4. The numbers are set to be released on Wednesday. Has the tide of rising inflation turned? ANC’s business group will provide a preview to the numbers.

Tackling the third telco

Sen. Grace Poe will be on ANC’s Headstart to talk about the probe on the third telco. ANC will seek out any updates on the issue including the case assailing the franchise of Mislatel filed by the consortium led by Chavit Singson.
