UP downs Katipunan neighbor Ateneo

University of the Philippines middle Kathy Bersola hammers a kill against the defensive wall of Ateneo de Manila.

University of the Philippines opened its quarterfinals campaign on a high note by stopping the three-game winning roll of Ateneo de Manila, 25-18, 14-25, 25-20, 25-18 Saturday in the 13th V-League Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Maroons rebounded from a five-set loss to Far Eastern University at the end of the preliminary round a week ago and improved to 2-1 win-loss carryover record.

UP banked on its youthful hitters Isa Molde, Diana Carlos and veterans Nicole Tiamzon and Kathy Bersola to hand the Lady Eagles a 1-2 slate. The Lady Maroons will take on the defending champion National University Lady Bulldogs on Monday.

Skipper Bersola scored 12 points on 10 attacks and a pair of kills, Molde had 11 while Marian Buitre finished with 10 for UP. Carlos added nine while Tiamzon capped her night with five markers.

After a strong outing in the opening set, the Lady Maroons’ intesity dipped in the second frame – a situation that head coach Jerry Yee wittily joked about.

“‘Yun ang customary down time namin eh,” he said, whose squad split its head-to-head with their Katipunan neighbor last UAAP Season 78 including UP’s second round win that marked the Lady Maroons’ first win against Ateneo in almost a decade.

“‘Yan ang lagi nating sinasabi na hindi talaga tayo consistent eh,” Yee added with a chuckle. “‘Yun lang naman ‘yun eh, not as if dina-down natin ang players or sinisisi pa natin sila. Hindi naman ganoon eh.”

Team captain Michelle Morente and Bea De Leon scored 15 points each for the Lady Eagles.

Ateneo, which clinched the last quarterfinals ticket with a four-set playoff win over Technological Institute of the Philippines last Monday, will face eliminated University of Sto. Tomas on Monday.
